The short resume of the lecture:
Tonight we will talk about two different viewpoints and interpretations of the basic Christian prayer - OUR FATHER (LORD'S PRAYER):
- Through the orthodox theology of the bishop Nikolaj Velimirović ("The Lord's Prayer as the basis of the social organization")
- Through Rudolf Steiner's theosophical view
Our goal is to stress that in addition to the Christian understanding of this prayer, there are other interpretations that in their own way explain its content, reducing the seven petitions of the prayer to the seven elements of nature, which can be found everywhere - from the structure of a man to seven tones in music, seven lines of 'periodic table of elements', seven of cases - and all of this is divided into two components 3 + 4.
When we talk about prayer in general, and from the Christian point of view - we need to remember the prayer through which Christ showed the basic mood that would have to apply to every prayer, prayer that says, 'Father, let this cup miss me, but not my will but Your will should be".
If the one who prays wants to do it in a Christian way, he has to maintain this basic orientation in his soul, regardless of what he himself prays for. This is the basic praying mood on which, through the sublime spirituality, relies Bishop Nikolaj Velimirović.
On the other hand, from the theosophical point of view, if we break down all real prayers word by word, we will never find that these were only the linguistic and grammatical words strung nicely.
The old philosophers had used the formulas of prayer from a spiritual science. There is no prayer formula that is not born out of great knowledge. If the prayers were not so disposed, where would they hold the power to act for thousands of years - and to do so equally for naive and mindless man as for the wise man?
OUR FATHER WHO ART IN HEAVEN
When you say these words, you admit that he is your heavenly Father, but at the same time the father of your servant and laborer, your sick and dying neighbors; because You are commanded by the Son of God, the supreme bearer of truth about God, to say 'Our Father' rather than' My Father '. (Bishop Nikolaj)
"The Lord's Prayer" does not express anything other than the human soul - at the point when the soul is elevated properly so that it can be called a soul. Because the soul's origin is divine and we are part of the Godhead. Through prayer one should, at times of need, rise to the developmental awareness of his seven-member nature, and seven petitions express spiritually-scientific impact on human nature. (Rudolf Steiner)
OUR FATHER WHO ART IN HEAVEN
It means that we belong where our Father is, that's where our homeland is. The pagans who see their parent only in the material world, whether as a man or as a river or the sun and the moon, cannot even believe in a homeland other than the earthly one. Homeland is a great treasure, and the Lord said, "where your treasure is, there your heart is as well." (Bishop Nikolaj)
This indicates the deepest basis of the human nature, the most concealed man's being that, according to the Christian esoteric, belongs to a spiritual realm (kingdom). Three of the first prayers relate to the three senior members of human nature, the man's divine content: "Hallowed be Thy Name, Thy Kingdom come, Thy Will be done" (Rudolf Steiner)
THY WILL BE DONE ON EARTH AS IT IS IN HEAVEN
The heavenly spiritual world is governed by the perfect will of God. However, the rule of God's will is not imposed by force, but it is voluntarily adopted by the light spirits, who submit their will to God's will as the only infallible one. (Bishop Nikolaj)
Life of the universe comes from the divine emanation. The whole universe is incited by the universal will, which is expressed in infinite variety. Therefore, the will is the center. (Rudolf Steiner)
OUR DAILY BREAD GIVE US THIS DAY
As we don't say MY father, we don't say MY bread either. The Father is common to all children of God and the Father's gifts are shared. This is the first morally-economical principle of social order; morally, because we recognize that the bread is from God, and economically, because the bread that God gives belongs to all. (Bishop Nikolaj)
The physical body can be looked at as an element of the material part of our planet. Its substance was taken from the parts of the planet and so it returns back to it. (Rudolf Steiner)
AND FORGIVE US OUR TRANSGRESSIONS AS WE FORGIVE THOSE WHO TRANSGRESS AGAINST US
God is resolute in putting on us this responsibility. He will forgive us in the same way we forgive others. But foolish is the fear of this liability and this condition, because we owe infinitely more to God than what the whole world could owe to us. (Bishop Nikolaj)
If we look at the etheric body, we must look at it as a constituent of all that surrounds us, and do the same for the astral body. You should know that all drives, lust and passion are in the astral body. There are also all the happiness and woes, all the joy and pain, and all that trembles in the human soul. Etheric body conceals more constant and enduring soul properties. All that is slowly evolving: lasting tendencies, constant features of temperament, permanent habits, all of them are anchored in the etheric or living body. The wrongs against the community, that originate in the wrongful etheric body, have always and everywhere been classified as transgressions. (Rudolf Steiner)
AND LEAD US NOT INTO TEMPTATION
Temptation equals testing. If there were no sin, there wouldn't be temptation. But we feel frail and we pray to God not to put us to the test, because we will fail and founder. As soon the earthly rule and physical desire arise in human beings, they lose the vision of the ever present heavenly Father and they fall into desperate and fatal selfishness: they start to hallow their own name above the God's. And lead us not into temptation - positively speaking means: save us from temptation! That is, save us from ourselves! (Bishop Nikolaj)
All that is changeable easily and quickly is anchored in the astral body. And the sins of the higher individual nature, committed by a man as a distinct personality, appear as a result of the astral body's properties, under the influence of Lucifer. And a possibility of the astral body's fallacy is called menace (temptation). Due to the temptations, an individual takes on himself a personal sin. (Rudolf Steiner)
BUT DELIVER US FROM EVIL
We pray to the heavenly Father to save us from Satan, who is the holder of all evil. Satan blinds people and this blindness leads from illusion to illusion, both socially and in personal life. So Satan - "the statesman" whispers to the people from the immemorial times. And people have listened to him a thousand times, a thousand times they shed fraternal blood, blasphemed at their heavenly Father and, disappointed, have fallen into despair a thousand times. (Bishop Nikolaj)
It remains yet the fallacy of the human "I", the true personality. Egotism has entered the human body and therefore the man has become become egotistical being, the "I" follows all the instincts and inclinations of the body. In secret science, the word evil is never used for anything else but for a transgression of the human 'I'. (Rudolf Steiner)
